Experience shows . . .
Transcribers must have excellent organizational skills, and the ability to follow a schedule consistently. Being even 2 minutes late to an assignment is a problem for students, instructors, and teamers.
They must also be respectful of teammates and other service providers. Gossiping and complaining about co-workers has no place in a profession such as ours. Using appropriate strategies to deal with people problems is required.
Find out if the candidate is comfortable in school settings, religious settings, community settings, etc. Transcribers must fulfill their professional role to provide accurate communication access, even if they disagree with a speaker's message, disapprove of a teacher's style, etc.
Transcribers and admins said . . .
"Showing up on time, dressing appropriately, remaining unobtrusive, getting along with others."
"As an administrator, confidentiality is a must. Not sharing contact information (business consumers, individuals that are deaf or hard-of-hearing or other transcriber names/contact info) with competitors is equally as important as typing skills or the ability to multi-task."
"A good transcriber will be able to explain our Code of Ethics to you. He or she must be able to quickly decide how to behave and respond in ethically challenging situations."
